Free panel schedule template generator

Fill out an electrical panel schedule online, balance the load across phases automatically, and download a clean PDF for the panel door and the job file. Then engrave the panel nameplate and disconnect tags that the code actually requires.

What the NEC requires on a panel schedule

NEC 408.4(A) requires every circuit and circuit modification to be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose, and that identification has to live on a circuit directory located on the face of the panel or inside the panel door. Generic entries like "lights" or "receptacles" do not meet the standard. An inspector is looking for something closer to "Corridor 110 lighting" or "Break room receptacles, north wall."

NEC 408.4(B) goes a step further on service and feeder equipment: the panel itself has to carry a field applied label identifying the device or equipment that supplies it, and that marking must have sufficient durability to withstand the environment. A ballpoint pen on a paper directory does not, which is why the identification that matters gets engraved on two-ply acrylic panel labels.

On the same equipment, NEC 110.16 requires arc flash warning marking, and NEC 110.24 requires the available fault current to be field marked on service equipment. If you are filling out a schedule for new service gear, plan on arc flash labels and a fault current label going on at the same time.

How to fill out a panel schedule

  • 1. Head the schedule. Panel name, location, what feeds it, system voltage, main breaker size, and AIC rating. This is the block an inspector reads first.
  • 2. Match the layout to the panelboard. Most commercial and residential panels number odd on the left and even on the right. Use the 3-phase layout when you need A/B/C indicators printed next to each slot.
  • 3. Describe each circuit specifically. Room number or area, plus the load. Write it the way someone troubleshooting at 2 a.m. needs to read it.
  • 4. Set breaker size and poles. Multi-pole breakers occupy every other space in a 2-column panel, and this tool splits their load across the phases they span.
  • 5. Enter VA and check the balance. Under about 10 percent imbalance is a good target. Higher than that and it is worth moving a load to another phase before the panel is energized.
  • 6. Label the panel for real. Download the PDF for the door pocket, then engrave the breaker identification and the panel nameplate so the marking outlasts the paper.

Schedule done? Label the gear before inspection

The paper schedule covers NEC 408.4(A). The panel itself still needs durable field-applied marking. We laser-engrave it and ship in 1–2 business days from Clayton, NC.

Panel & equipment nameplates

Panel name, voltage, and "fed from" source per NEC 408.4(B). Engraved two-ply acrylic, any size up to 18″.

Arc flash labels

NEC 110.16 warning labels with voltage, arc flash boundary, and incident energy or PPE category.

Frequently asked questions

Is this panel schedule generator really free?
Yes. Build the schedule, calculate the loads, and download the PDF at no cost, with no signup required. We build it because the people who fill out panel schedules are the same people who need engraved panel labels, and we would rather earn that order than gate a tool.
Does the NEC require a panel schedule?
NEC 408.4(A) requires every circuit and circuit modification to be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose, and that identification must be on a circuit directory located on the face or inside the panel door. NEC 408.4(B) adds a field-applied label identifying the source that supplies the panel. A completed panel schedule is how you satisfy both.
How does the tool calculate phase balance?
Standard panelboard bussing repeats A, A, B, B, C, C down the can, so slots 1 and 2 land on phase A, 3 and 4 on phase B, and so on. Enter VA per circuit and the tool assigns each load to the phase its slot lands on, splitting multi-pole breakers evenly across the phases they span, then reports connected VA and amps per phase plus the imbalance percentage.
Can I use this for a residential load center?
Yes. Pick 120/240V 1-phase and the single column or 2-column layout, set the number of spaces to match the load center, and the calculations switch to a two-leg panel.
Is the connected load the same as a NEC load calculation?
No. This tool totals connected VA and shows phase balance, which is what a panel schedule documents. It does not apply NEC Article 220 demand factors, continuous load multipliers, or feeder sizing. Have a licensed engineer or the AHJ confirm the design load.
Do I need engraved labels for every circuit?
Most electricians print or tape-print the circuit directory itself, and that is fine for NEC 408.4(A). What gets engraved is the equipment identification required by NEC 408.4(B) and 110.22: the panel nameplate, the fed-from marking, and the disconnect tags. The Design the panel nameplate button loads your panel name, main amps, voltage, and fed-from into our label designer as an engraved two-ply acrylic nameplate. Most orders ship in 1-2 business days from Clayton, North Carolina.
